I know now that Namibia is a country best experienced with time, curiosity, and a willingness to follow the road into immense, quiet spaces — spaces that will stay with me forever.
We wanted to see Namibia, and Safari & Shutter handled everything end-to-end. Our 12-day itinerary reflected a genuine understanding of the country's immense distances, staggering landscapes and complicated culture. I had traveled in Africa before but never self-driven, and what, in fact, became my wildest African adventure never once felt intimidating. We drove through constantly changing terrain — desert, mountains, open plains, dramatic skies, wildlife habitat — with the comfortable sense that the trip had been designed specifically for us rather than pulled off a shelf.
Every detail was thoughtfully planned: the route, the timing, the lodges and camps, and the balance between days on the road and time to stop, take a breath, and simply take in the country. Safari & Shutter's leader, Grant Marcus, has deep bush experience and brings a photographer's eye to the planning — anticipating the quality of light, the scale of landscapes, and wildlife encounters. And there were wonderful surprises everywhere. One evening at Sossusvlei, Grant's wife, Monique — a gifted naturalist in her own right — walked a short distance from camp and came back with iPhone video of a barking gecko in close-up. Small moments like that were as unforgettable as the flight Grant arranged for us over the enormous pyramid dunes of the Namib Sand Sea in a Cessna 206. And have I mentioned that Grant is a wonderful braai chef?
Above all, the trip was authentic. I know now that Namibia is a country best experienced with time, curiosity, and a willingness to follow the road into immense, quiet spaces — spaces that will stay with me forever. Safari & Shutter gave us exactly that while quietly handling the complicated work behind the scenes. We are already planning our next trip.
